Welcome to Dr. Aditi's Fetal Medicine Centre

Cordocentesis/ Fetal Blood Sampling

Cordocentesis

Cordocentesis or percutaneous umbilical blood sampling or Fetus Blood sampling is a fetus test in which a sample of a baby’s blood is obtained from the umbilical cord for testing. It is usually done after 18 weeks of pregnancy by an expert perinatologist. Also, it can be used to deliver blood and medication to a baby through the umbilical cord.

Cordocentesis Indication

Following are the indications when a cordocentesis is used:

  • Detect and treat fetal blood conditions like fetal
  • When there are no accurate outcomes from other physical examinations

Pre-Examination Procedure

If you are 23 or more weeks pregnant, you would be asked to stop eating or drinking a night before the cordocentesis.

During the Cordocentesis Test

Nearly 30 to 60 minutes prior to the test, you may be given antibiotics to minimize the risk of uterine infection. And is usually done through a tube inserted into a vein.

With the help of an ultrasound, the position of the umbilical cord will be determined. A special gel will be applied to your belly and a small transducer will be placed to show the baby’s position on the screen.

As per the guidance by ultrasound, a thin needle will be inserted into the uterus through the abdomen, and a small amount of blood will be extracted from the vein in the umbilical cord along with the removal of the needle.

Post-Examination Procedure

After the procedure, an external ultrasound will be performed to check your baby’s heart rate. Following this, you will be recommended to rest for the remaining day and resume normal activities the next day.

Results:

If your report is normal, your doctor will discuss if any follow-up appointment is required. And if the baby is suffering from any infection, the doctor will suggest some treatment regarding its cure. However, if the baby is suffering from severe anemia, then a blood transfusion through the umbilical cord can be performed.
