Prenatal Diagnosis

Prenatal diagnosis involves diagnosing the health and condition of the fetus before birth. It’s a method that helps your doctor analyze if your baby is having any disorder or not.

Indications of Prenatal diagnosis include:

  • Deciding if pregnancy is to be continued or not
  • Planning the remaining weeks of pregnancy.
  • Detecting possible problems that are likely to occur in newborn fetuses.
  • Finding out possible complications with the pregnancy.

With the evolution of every ailment, there is always a cure for that. Similarly for diagnosing these prenatal conditions there is a wide range of surgical and non-surgical procedures available. However, this prenatal diagnosis can be performed during a specific period for best results. Prenatal diagnosis procedures include:

  • Ultrasonography: A non-invasive procedure that uses high-frequency sound waves to create images from the pattern of echo made by various tissues and organs, including the fetus. The fetus can be first identified in the first 6 weeks of gestation.
  • Amniocentesis: A prenatal procedure that diagnoses genetic disorders and fetal health issues. And is performed between 14  and 20 weeks of gestation.
  • Chorionic Villus Sampling: An prenatal procedure that involves procuring a sample of the chorionic villa from the placenta for testing. This test is usually performed between 9.5 and 12.5 weeks gestation.
  • Percutaneous Umbilical Blood Sampling/ Cordocentesis: A genetic test that examines extracted blood from the umbilical cord to detect fetal anomalies.

In order to prevent illness, it is better to value wellness and take every possible precaution to save your fetus from such severe life-threatening disorders.
