A procedure in which blood is sent to the fetus through an umbilical cord. It may be recommended when a fetus has anemia.
The following are the reasons that cause fetal anemia:
The aim of intrauterine transfusion is to treat heart non-functioning that can be caused by anemia, and allow pregnancy continuation with the intention of delivering a healthy baby.
Intrauterine Tranfusion Procedure
Intrauterine transfusion can be performed in two ways namely:
Usually, intrauterine transfusion is performed on an outpatient basis. The procedure involves providing local anesthesia, antibiotics, and IV sedation, which also anesthetizes the fetus also. In addition to this, another medication is provided to stop fetal movement. With the guidance of ultrasound, the position of the fetus and placenta is determined. Following that, the surgeon inserts a needle into the mother’s abdomen and further into the umbilical cord vein or the fetus’s abdomen. Red blood cells that correspond with the fetal’s blood type are sent to the fetus by the needle.
Also, fetal transfusion might be repeatedly needed every few weeks until the fetus is delivered.
Intrauterine Transfusion Complications
The chances of complications are very rare, but as it is a procedure, there might be some risks that are listed below.
