One of the most significant tests performed while the baby is still in the womb is Fetal echocardiography. This uniquely designed machine utilizes sound waves to examine the heart of your prenatal baby. Then the machine examines these sound waves and creates an image or echocardiogram of the inside of the heart. Providing precise detailed information on how your baby’s heart is formed and its functioning.
Need for Fetal Echocardiography
Following are the reason why your doctor would recommend a fetal echocardiogram:
Preparation for the Test:
Despite other pregnancy tests, there is no need to have a full bladder for the examination. And the test lasts for 30 minutes to two hours for analysis.
During the Procedure:
Similar to general pregnancy screening it is performed through the abdomen or vagina. When examined through the abdomen it is called abdomen echocardiography and when examined through the vagina it is called vaginal echocardiography.
Abdomen Echocardiography: In this procedure, a lubricating gel is applied to the woman’s abdomen, the ultrasound device is gently placed on the women’s abdomen and images are taken. The tests last for an average of 45 – 120 minutes based on the complexity of the baby’s heart.
Vaginal Echocardiography: This test is usually done in the initial stage of pregnancy. A small sonography transducer is inserted into the vagina and images of the baby’s heart are taken from there.
Result:
If your doctor confirms that the test is normal; then it means that there is no abnormality. And if he finds any abnormalities like heart rhythm fluctuation, heart defect, or any other problem then you might be recommended more tests for diagnosing the problem and treating it.
